About Fellas

Fellas

Our history

We started singing together as part of a prostate cancer charity initiative that aimed to take around twenty fellas who had never sung before up to a performance standard choir to support the well established K Shoes male voice choir at their Christmas concert in 2017.
Our new choir, known then as Men United, achieved this objective and a group of us became friends and wanted to carry on singing together.
We changed our name to Fellas and began to attract interest through informal concerts in pubs in the area and busking around our market place. We also enjoyed outdoor singing in special places like Cathedral Caves, Rydal Caves and around the Mushroom on Scout Scar. These occasions were the only places we met during lockdowns for COVID 19 when we were otherwise held together by Zoom.
We made a giant leap forward in late 2019 when Emily Robinson agreed to become our Musical Director . As we emerged from COVID restrictions our membership grew to its current level of around 30 and the quality of our singing improved thanks to Emily’s excellent tuition.
With Emily’s audio recordings of our songs, it’s easy to listen and practise songs and harmonies between our weekly sessions. An ability to read music helps, but is absolutely not a requirement. Fellas is always happy to welcome new members, with or without previous experience of singing in a choir.
As our choir has grown we have deliberately improved our structures and procedures to ensure we offer the best possible environment to meet , sing, socialise and perform .
Having fun and fellowship together is important as is behaving in a supportive manner to each other. At each of our formal concerts we aim to give a charitable donation of all income above costs of the event.
Singing together as a group is an uplifting, enjoyable and supportive experience. If you’ve ever had the thought to join a choir, do come along and give us a try – contact us via the link below and we’ll be in touch.
You will be very welcome!

Fellas Musical Director

Emily Robinson

“I’m a professional singer and all-round bossy boots who makes it my mission to get a group of blokes to do what I say, to the best of their ability, every Wednesday.  I keep my wonderful bunch of Fellas in check through a mix of energy, musical expertise, banter, and sheer dogged determination.  I try to source music that is engaging and well suited to the group’s ability, rewriting scores if necessary and writing my own arrangements.  As most of the group doesn’t read music, I record all vocal parts for our music so people can practise at home and feel confident they’re contributing to the team.  It also helps new members to catch up!

I’m equally committed to my other three choirs: Carnforth Community Choir, Endmoor Community Choir and Hutton Harmonies Ladies’ Choir.  I also teach singing privately, and at Kendal College on the Performing Arts course.

I’m a classical soprano soloist, so I do lots of singing at concerts and weddings too.  You can see what I’m up to by visiting my website at emilyrobinson.net
